These three basics are all you need for a home gym

Building a home gym doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to take up a lot of space.  To create a gym that you can use to work out at home, you just need to be smart and meet a series of specific requirements.  Keep reading and we'll look at some of the ways you can do this without breaking the bank.  Ultimately, it comes down to buying just a few items, each of which is highly affordable and can be easily stored to avoid taking up too much space.

  • Pull bar

The first item you'll need is a pull up bar.  Before you pick up a pull-up bar, you'll be able to train almost every muscle group using just your own body weight.  The only exceptions are the muscles involved in traction.  That means things like biceps and lats, which require you to have something to hang from.

And that's where the pull up bar comes in.  With a pull up bar, you'll be able to start performing not only pull ups, but also chin ups, rows and even hang sit-ups.  This now means you really can train every muscle group, even if you're still limited to using just your body weight.

  •  Dumbbells

This is where dumbbells come in.  With them you can start using weights and you will be able to train all muscle groups.  Dumbbells simply allow you to add a weight to either hand, which means you will be able to perform not only curls but also triceps kickbacks, triceps extensions, dumbbell presses, shoulder presses, up rows, crunches shoulder presses, weighted squats, lunges, and all manner of other exercises.  Effectively, almost everything you would normally be able to do with a barbell can be done with a pair of dumbbells – and more.

What's important to your long-term success here is that you have enough weight to allow you to overcome the challenge as you go.  The good news is that you can buy adjustable weight dumbbells and this will allow you to add and remove weight plates as needed to continue consistently increasing the challenge.

  • Bank

All that remains is to add a bench, that is, a weight bench and preferably one that allows you to change the angle.  That way, you can perform not only dumbbell bench presses and flies, but also isolated curls (sitting with your back against the bench), incline bench presses and bench presses, shoulder presses, and all sorts of other things using much heavier weights.

With just these three items, you now effectively have everything you need to create a fully functional home gym.  No matter how far you progress, it will provide enough challenges to keep you on your toes and keep growing!

Of course where you expand from there is up to you.
